This weekend saw the first weekend of the year’s County Championships. Shepshed ASC were well represented at the meet, with a lot of new faces gaining experience at the annual event. A fantastic 30 out of 32 PB’s were recorded, and everyone that swam PB’d in at least one of their events so well done! In particular, well done to Alex Callender, Alice Cowley, Adam Crook Rumsey, Mark Crook Rumsey and Matt Wright for getting in the top 5 within their age group! Birthday boy and counties veteran Matt Wright also won the over all 200m Fly, and swam in the final of the senior 100m Breaststroke, so well done to him! Well done also to Jake Spicer who came in the top 10 in all of his events, in one of the biggest age groups! Well done to everybody that swam, a full write up will be done at the end of the championships.

  • 2nd weekend

Shepshed ASC was represented by 18 swimmers on the second weekend of the 2008 County Championships, and what a successful weekend it was. The swimmers came away with 30 PBs,6 top 5 places, 3 medals, 2 finalists and 2 Midland District qualifying times!!! It was the first time many of the swimmers had swum their event which gave them a great experience. Next week is the final weekend of this years championships, concluding with the 50m and IM events (and 800m FC for Christ Clifton!), so good luck to everyone swimming next weekend….keep up the good work!!!

  • The Final Weekend

The final weekend of the Leicestershire County Championships finished on a high for Shepshed Swimming Club! The closing weekend held at Braunstone saw the 50m sprints and IM races. Over the two days, Shepshed was represented by 19 swimmers, and came away with another fantastic 42 PB’s to add to the ever growing total, despite the fact that many swimmers had only recently PB’d in a lot of these events in the latest Leicester League galas. A few special mentions from this weekend; well done to Blake Russell who had his first County Championships races this weekend. Blake was entered slowest in 2 out of 3 of his races, but ended up coming 8th and 9th in those events in his age group! Congratulations to Matt Wright, who swam in another final, this time in the 100m IM, and he and Mark Crook Rumsey secured another 3 district qualifying times between them, Mark in the 50m Fly and 50m FC and Matt in the 50m Fly (and only 0.02secs away from the 50m FC time!), incredible achievements for them both.

All swimmers that have represented Shepshed ASC in this years County Championships should be very proud of themselves, as they have been great ambassadors for the club. Some statistics for you: 21 swimmers from Shepshed took part in the championships (6 more than last year), and swam in a combined total of 114 races! The PB rate is astonishing; 90% of all swims were PBs!!! This is an amazing achievement and you should all be VERY proud! There were 48 top 10 age group places (an increase from 38 from last year), and a fantastic 9 medals (top 3 places)! These came from a range of swimmers: Matt Wright; bronze 200m BK, gold 200m Fly, Adam Crook Rumsey; silver 200m Brst, Alex Callender; bronze 200m FC and 50m FC, Eleanor Hopewell, bronze 50m Fly, Mark Crook Rumsey; bronze 200m Fly, 100m Fly and 50m Fly. A grand total of 5 district qualifying times were also achieved by Matt Wright and Mark Crook Rumsey, who will have the opportunity of representing Shepshed in the Midland Championships. These lads put in a lot of hard work and commitment to achieve these times, and are people you can all look up to for inspiration!

The final Bagcat positions (top 10) were also announced and awarded during the final session on Sunday. Bagcat points are awarded for each race, and final positions are calculated from the best swims from 4(or 5, depending on age) categories; best 50m swim, best 100m form swim (depending on age), best 200m form swim, best IM swim and best distance FC swim (200m+). A huge congratulations to Jake Spicer who achieved a fantastic 9th place in the 11years age group!! Jake was awarded a trophy for his achievement. Some other Shepshed Swimmers were also very close to achieving a top 10 positions; Eleanor Hopewell came 14th in the 11years age group, (even though she was one of the very youngest in the group), Alex Callender came 12th in the 9 years age group (despite his points only coming from 2 out of a possible 4 categories!), Blake Russell came 14th in the 9 years age group (having again only competed in 2 out of 4 categories), Thomas Insley came 13th in the 10 years age group, Shaun Crook Rumsey came 15th in the 10 years age group, Jack Insley came 13th in the 12 years age group and Adam Crook Rumsey came 12th in the 14 years age group!

I would also like to say a massive thank you to Debbie Spicer and Gerard McLoughlin, who helped me poolside during the sessions. They did a fantastic job organising the swimmers, getting them ready and preparing them for their races (as well as keeping me company!), so thank you, your help was much appreciated! Thank you also to those that officiated and helped backstage; Pete and Jill Ramsell, Alan Wright and Mrs King. Hopefully I haven’t forgotten anyone, but thank you all very much!!
