County Championships 2009

leicestershire asa at shepshed swimmimg club   2009

——————————————————————–

If you are competing at the County CHampionships, please make sure you come prepared knowing what events you have. Have an early night the night before, and think about what you have for lunch/dinner before you session; some pasta or a jacket potato is always good! Drink plenty before the meet, and you need to have at least 2 drinks with you per session that you will be there! If you are going to be there for more than one session (i.e. on the Sunday) you will need to bring some food with you, again pasta is easy. But don’t bring too much, and please not too many sweets and definatly no chocolate!! Fruit on the other hand is much better! :)Make sure you pack the costume/trunks you want to race in, and also a spare, just incase! You need your googles/hat (and again, spares!) Please make sure your hat is a Shepshed one, this is your chance to represent Shepshed to the rest of the County. Obviously you’ll also need your towel. It is also a very good idea to bring a pair of shorts/tracksuit bottoms to wear on poolside over your swimming stuff and some flipflops! We will have your Shepshed T-Shirts for you (but maybe bring a spare t-shirt as well just incase!)

Having said that, please don’t bring too big a bag with you though as we won’t have much room to sit in! Just bring what you need. When you arrive, look out for me, I should be there already! If not, each club is allocated a section along poolside so just keep going until you find Shepshed!

I hope you’re looking forward to the next few weekends! Good luck to everyine swimming! Go Shepshed!

Suzi :)

The entry forms for the age group county championships have already come through and need to be returned by 20th December, so we don’t have long!!!

The county championships are a fantastic opportunity to swim different events and against different swimmers than you would normally swim, and are a good experience, and it would be great to get a big squad going this year. What I have done is gone through every swimmers pb’s, and put at the bottom of this notice the list of swimmers that have already qualified for some swims. I have also included some slightly less experienced swimmers I would like to speak to about this event, so please come and speak to me.

I am trying to get round to speak to everyone that already qualifies for the county champs, and if I haven’t spoken to you yet (swimmer and parent) then please come and speak to me at training (or give me a call/email) so I can see if you are interested, explain a few things and go through with you the swims you could enter. If your name is not on the list and you would like to compete please come and speak to me, chances are you may well qualify just haven’t done the swims before, so if you speak to me we can see whether you may be eligible.

One important thing I need to explain is a points system called bagcats which is used for 14u boys and 13u girls. It is quite a complicated system, but in essence, it gives and overall score at the end of the championships, to compare performance over a range of events taking into account age, distance and stroke. The points are awarded for the following categories, if you enter more than one event in each category, your best score will be used. It is important to enter at least one event from each category to make the most out of the system:

  • A sprint; 50m
  • A 100m swim (best 100m swim, girls 11+, boys 12+ only)
  • A form 200m swim (other than frontcrawl/medley)
  • A distance swim (200m FC + may be restricted dependant on age)
  • An individual medley swim

Although swims of 200m+ may seem daunting, especially as you race a lot shorter distances in galas, it is really important to get experience swimming these events and I strongly recommend you attempt them.

I am in the process of handing out entry forms for the championship. If I haven’t given you one yet, please come and see me to get one. If you could start looking at the events you would like to swim, and if there are any events that you don’t qualify for we can see if we can do a timed swim to check.

The cost for these championships is £3.75 per event, and there will also be an additional fee that needs to be paid to register to the ASA at a higher level, this will be in the region of £15.25, but should not need to be paid until February 2009 time .

As the closing date is 20th Dec, we really need to be getting ready to start sending off entries by the beginning of December so we can organise registering swimmers at the appropriate level etc, so please start to think seriously about the events you would like to enter, and please go through these events with me first too.

I have also included the dates of the championships with this notice. Age of competition is as of March 15th 2009.
