County Championships 2009, Gala’s 2&3

And with some medal winning performances, and more district qualifying times, Sunday was a great finish the the first weekend of the 2009 County Championships! With just 4 swimmers attending the afternoon session on Sunday, Jake Spicer started it all off in fine form (and a PB!) in the 100m breaststroke. The girls follwed suit in the 200m breaststroke, with Natasha McLoughlin swimming in her first ever County Championships, smashing her entry time…and smiling at the cameraman whilst she did it! Eleanor Hopewell was back again, and with another fantastic performance knocked a massive 30seconds off her time from last year and came 9th in her age! Jake was then back in action in the 200m BK, knocking 8seconds off a PB set in October, and edging his way nearer to a district qualifying time! Then Alice Cowley finished off the morning in the 400m IM, racing the event for the first time, putting in a gret performance and coming 3rd!

6 swimmers were present for the evening session. Beth Tomlinson started off the girls 100m Brst, showing her proess in the event with a great swim, 7 seconds faster than last year! Sophie Tupper followed in the same lane in the next heat with an equally great swim knocking 2 seconds off her time from last year and finally Eleanor Hopewell completed her busy weekend in the next heat, putting in a fantastic performance, smashing her entry time and moving herself from been entered 11th to coming 5th in her age!

The weekend was finished off with some of the hardest events, the 200m fly and 800m FC! Mark Crook Rumsey and Matt Wright were headto head for the 200m fly in the final heat. In a rac, which saw the leader drop out allowed Matt to power through and win the championship, with Mark in tow, coming second and knocking 10 seconds off his time from last year! Jake Spicer finished off the weekend with arguably the best performance of the weekend in the 800m FC. Going out strong in an event in which he’s already got his Midland qualifing time, Jake was able to keep the pace and pull away from his competitors, smashing his qualifying time he already had in the process and coming 2nd in his age group!!

It really was a great start to the championships from everybody, good luck to everyone swimming next weekend!
